Upskilling Opportunities Curated Specifically For Older Adults

Kingston, Jamaica - February 3, 2024: With a focus on enhancing artistic development, Golden Designs will host art classes tailored to seniors aged 60 and above, aiming to enrich their quality of life.

These classes are part of a broader initiative to engage senior citizens in fulfilling and inspiring activities. The Golden Designs Art Class for Seniors provides older adults with the opportunity to explore various artistic mediums including painting, drawing, crocheting, layered textile, social media, and computer skills.

These classes are structured in two semesters annually, from February to April and September to November. The first round of classes for 2024 will begin on February 15 and will be held on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at Regardless (The Manley Centre), the former residence of Edna Manley, Jamaica’s esteemed Mother of Art.

Founder of Golden Designs, Shelly-Ann Thompson, shares her motivation behind these classes, stating, “Lifelong learning has a profoundly positive impact on seniors, contributing to their mental health, cognitive abilities, and overall wellbeing.” Thompson emphasizes the importance of keeping seniors' minds active and stimulated in later stages of life.

The classes are led by trained and experienced artisans, graduates of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Among the instructors is Master Art Educator, Dr. Verona Barnes, a skilled artisan proficient in various visual techniques including crochet and textiles.

Dr. Barnes explains her involvement with Golden Designs: “Initially focusing on crochet as a textile construction technique used for creating wearable and decorative articles. As time progressed, the class expanded into other textile-related activities like macrame, embroidery, and applique as participants expressed interest.”

She further shares: “As a facilitator and senior myself, it's gratifying to share my expertise and witness the discovery of hidden creative talents among participants, some of whom have never explored such activities before.”

In collaboration with a vetted transportation company, Golden Designs offers safe and affordable transportation to and from the classes for participants located within the corporate area at a minimal cost.

The Golden Designs Art Class for Seniors will focus on providing skill-building opportunities crafted for older individuals. Art serves as a medium of expression, fostering a sense of accomplishment and purpose for all ages.

A senior participating in the classes will not only gain a support group of like-minded individuals but also be able to enhance their abilities and enrich their lives through artistic development.

Elder Abuse Awareness: Understanding the Legal Aspects of Elder Care and Its Importance

Senior citizens are being encouraged to become knowledgeable about the various laws that protect their rights as older adults. While Jamaica does not have an Elder Abuse Act, several pieces of legislation can be used to prevent or punish elder abuse. Attorney-at-law, Tamara Francis Riley-Dunn, has expressed concern over the increasing cases of elder abuse, noting that many senior citizens suffer in silence. Elder abuse can take many forms and primarily occurs due to the vulnerability and dependence experienced by seniors. “It is accepted that our elders are 60 years and older, and we are dealing with a vulnerable group who, due to their vulnerability, are dependent on others, which can lead to abuse,” she said. The veteran Jamaican attorney discussed the issue of elder abuse during an interview with Golden Conversations , an online programme for older adults. Every year on June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is commemorated in Jamaica and globally. The 2024 t...
