"I needed something to do; sitting at home was very horrible," reflected Valrie James when asked about her decision to learn the art of crocheting. The spirited 73-year-old from Seaview Gardens in Kingston, Jamaica, discovered the transformative power of crocheting in her pursuit of a purposeful life. Just four months into her crocheting adventure, she has blossomed into a skilled artisan, crafting beautiful decorative pieces and fashion-forward creations that have captivated shoppers.
Retiring in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic after many years of working as a janitor, James found herself without a source of income. Struggling financially and with a desire for independence, she sought a meaningful way to fill her days. Little did she know that her journey to self-discovery was just around the corner.
In mid-2023, through a network of friends, James was introduced to Golden Designs — an organisation dedicated to providing lifelong learning activities through the arts for seniors. In September, James enrolled in the crochet/layered textile class, she felt an immediate sense of belonging, as if she had found a second family.
James attended the crochet/layered textile class on Thursdays, absorbing the wisdom imparted by the instructor. Her journey was not without hurdles as being left-handed posed challenges, but she persevered, fueled by an unyielding determination to excel in her newfound craft.
With the assistance of friends and online YouTube tutorials, James honed her skills. Her initial creations, including exquisite bracelets, drew admiration from experienced crocheters, amazed at her “fast” progress. With humility, she acknowledged, "I haven't reached 100, and I don’t reach 50 either in terms of my crocheting, but I am catching on."
Golden Designs proved to be a turning point in James's life, providing not only a space to practice her craft but also a platform to showcase her work to the world.
“They not only allow me to practice my crocheting but also give my work a lot of exposure.”

Her pieces were on display at the Golden Designs Senior Citizens Art Fair just before Christmas, where her talent captured the hearts of patrons, including The Most Hon. Mrs. Glynne Manley, widow of former Prime Minister Michael Manley.
“I was nervous because I knew I was not the perfectionist in this area.” Overwhelmed with gratitude and joy, James pondered the unexpected praise and purchases she received.
“These are very nice pieces. The women (such as James) have done some fabulous work,” said Mrs. Manley of the artworks at the fair.
The affirmation from Mrs. Manley was a beacon of hope for James. "I was so happy and thanking God that there was a shining light for me somewhere," she expressed. “I was proud of myself and realised in that moment that I needed to do more.”
Motivated by the positive feedback, James has set her sights on mastering the art of crocheting. She aspires to elevate her proficiency in the craft, firmly believing that through her daily practice, she will grasp other styles and patterns.

She credits her instructor, Dr. Verona Barnes, and Golden Designs Founder, Shelly-Ann Thompson, for their support in her journey of learning a new skill.
Encouraging her fellow seniors, James declared, "The sky's the limit, and age is just a number." She urged older adults not to succumb to boredom or loneliness, emphasising that with good health and strength, anything is achievable.
Drawing inspiration from the vibrant 106-year-old Winnifred ‘Ms Pearl’ Stern, another active member of the Golden Designs circle, James highlighted the boundless possibilities that come with age.
At 73, Valrie James has not only embraced a skill but also discovered a source of income. Crocheting has infused her life with joy and purpose, igniting excitement as she tries different patterns and designs. While crocheting her way to success, James stands as a testament to the belief that one is never too old to pursue their dreams.
